Wu Xing

When Chinese philosophy speaks of the Five Phases (wu xing) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — it is easy to mistake them for the Greek four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. But the similarity is superficial. The Chinese phases are not substances but processes. The word xing means movement or phases — they are verbs, not nouns.

Not Elements, But Phases

Wood is not just trees — it is the energy of growth, expansion, spring, and new beginnings. Fire is not just flame — it is the phase of peak activity, summer, and full expression. Earth is the pivot, the center, the transitional phase of late summer, associated with harvesting and nurturing. Metal is the phase of contraction, autumn, and letting go. Water is the depth of winter, storage, and the potential that lies dormant before the next cycle begins.

Each phase generates the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates ash that becomes Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal enriches Water, and Water nourishes Wood. This is the Generating Cycle (sheng), a positive feedback loop of creation and support.

But there is also the Controlling Cycle (ke), a system of checks and balances: Wood controls Earth (tree roots hold soil), Earth controls Water (dams contain floods), Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal (fire melts metal), and Metal controls Wood (axes cut trees). Health — in the body, in society, in nature — is the dynamic balance of these cycles.

The Universe in Five

The Five Phases provide a total classification system. Every phenomenon can be placed within the framework:

  • Wood: spring, east, green, sour, anger, the liver, the eyes, the number 3
  • Fire: summer, south, red, bitter, joy, the heart, the tongue, the number 2
  • Earth: late summer, center, yellow, sweet, worry, the spleen, the mouth, the number 5
  • Metal: autumn, west, white, pungent, grief, the lungs, the nose, the number 4
  • Water: winter, north, black, salty, fear, the kidneys, the ears, the number 1

This is not arbitrary association but a coherent worldview in which everything is connected. A person with excessive anger may be treated through the liver (Wood organ) with sour herbs (Wood flavor) — because the emotion, the organ, the flavor, and the season all belong to the same phase.

A Living System
#

The Five Phases are not a museum piece. Chinese doctors use them daily to diagnose and treat patients. Feng Shui practitioners use them to balance the energy of homes. Chinese cooks use them — often unconsciously — to create meals that harmonize warming and cooling foods. The system has survived for over two thousand years because it works: not as a scientific theory in the modern sense, but as a practical framework for understanding patterns of change in living systems.
