What Is Tai Chi (Yin and Yang)?
The symbol you have seen — a circle split into swirling black and white halves, each containing a dot of the other — is called the Taijitu, or the Tai Chi symbol. It represents the Daoist concept of dualism.
But here is what most Western explanations get wrong: Yin and Yang are NOT good versus evil. They are complementary forces that create each other. Day (Yang) cannot exist without night (Yin). Activity (Yang) is meaningless without rest (Yin). Masculine (Yang) defines itself against feminine (Yin).
In feng shui, every space needs both energies. A bedroom should lean Yin (calm, dark, restful). A home office should lean Yang (bright, active, energizing). The art is knowing which one your space needs more of.
The Eight Trigrams (Ba Gua)
The Bagua (“eight symbols”) consists of eight trigrams — three-line combinations of broken (Yin) and unbroken (Yang) lines. Each trigram represents a natural phenomenon and a family relationship:
| Trigram | Element | Symbolism |
|---|---|---|
| ☰ Qian | Heaven | Creativity, strength, father |
| ☷ Kun | Earth | Receptivity, nourishment, mother |
| ☲ Li | Fire | Clarity, passion, middle daughter |
| ☵ Kan | Water | Wisdom, depth, middle son |
| ☳ Zhen | Thunder | Movement, awakening, eldest son |
| ☴ Xun | Wind | Gentleness, growth, eldest daughter |
| ☶ Gen | Mountain | Stillness, stability, youngest son |
| ☱ Dui | Lake | Joy, pleasure, youngest daughter |
Together, these eight symbols form a complete system for understanding how energy expresses itself in the natural and human world.
The Bagua Map in Modern Feng Shui
The Bagua Map is the most practical tool in modern feng shui. It is an octagonal or square grid that maps nine “life areas” onto your home’s floor plan:
- Wealth & Prosperity (southeast)
- Fame & Reputation (south)
- Love & Relationships (southwest)
- Family & Health (east)
- Center (health and unity)
- Creativity & Children (west)
- Knowledge & Wisdom (northeast)
- Career (north)
- Helpful People & Travel (northwest)
To use it: stand at your front door facing inward. Align the bottom of the Bagua map with your front door wall. Now each room falls into one or more of these nine areas. This tells you which part of your home influences which aspect of your life.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Understanding Tai Chi and the Bagua gives you the “why” behind every feng shui rule. When you know that the southeast corner of your living room is your wealth area, you understand why placing a money tree there is not superstition — it is intentional energy alignment.
Feng shui is not about blindly following rules. It is about understanding how energy flows and making small adjustments that align your environment with your intentions. The Bagua and Tai Chi are the map and compass that make this possible.
